immigrants have searched for better shores for eons, and have longed for their homeland despite their search for something better. in the Welsh language, the word hiraeth refers to a longing for one's homeland. further, it is described as being beyond mere homesickness – it is described as an expression of the bond one feels with one's home country when is away from of it. this longing for one’s homeland is exacerbated by the forces of industry and globalization, which change the nature of the homelands we have in our memories. for example, the functional objects of our youth have become today’s curios and are often at risk of being discarded altogether. given this, to me, hiraeth is a homesickness for a home I cannot return to because the home that I know no longer exists, therefore I am not in hiraeth, hiraeth is in me. this armada of boats represents my journey to and through my new homeland – an endless journey replete with the remnants of the homeland of my youth.
